Osaka Tenmangu Shrine is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, known as the god of learning and arts. It is affectionately called Tenjin-san of Tenma and is famous for prayers for passing exams and for the Tenjin Matsuri, one of Japan's three major festivals.
It is said that Sugawara no Michizane deeply loved plum blossoms throughout his life. The plum tree, his beloved tree and sacred tree, is cherished and passed down, and is loved by people as a symbol of Tenmangu Shrine.
This is a commemorative wedding gift from Tenmangu Shrine, received by my parents about 60 years ago. It has been stored at my family home.
The outer box shows some age-related deterioration, but the sake cups are in beautiful condition.
